Having to wear mandatory coveralls and other industrial workwear can be taxing on the body when working in heated environments.
Summer has arrived, and for many working Canadians, that means sweltering hot days under the sun. Some of these uniforms donâ€™t lend themselves well to keeping cool, but there are some tips you can use to stay hydrated, healthy and alert in hot environments.

1. Donâ€™t overdo it before youâ€™re acclimatized.
If youâ€™re used to performing manual labour in a room-temperature environment, and then start working away in the hot summer sun, chances are you wouldnâ€™t last long.
It can take upwards of two weeks before a person builds up a tolerance to these new conditions. Youâ€™ll feel much better and be more productive in the long run if you build up your workload gradually, rather than racing from the start.
2. Take frequent breaks.
Make a point of taking periodic breaks where you can escape the sun, cool off and rehydrate your body. Thisâ€™ll help prevent your body from overheating and will allow you to keep up a steady pace throughout the day.
3. Plan your workday around the heat.
Try to organize your daily assignments so that you accomplish the more physically demanding tasks earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. Thisâ€™ll help you avoid overexerting yourself in the hottest part of the day (typically around 3 p.m.).
Depending on the nature of your work, you could also:
- Work in shady areas as the sun moves
- Find indoor activities during hot periods
- Rotate more physically demanding duties among coworkers
4. Drink the right liquid, and lots of it.
If youâ€™ve ever exerted yourself on a hot day without drinking enough water, youâ€™ve probably experienced a brutal headache as a result, and possibly worse. Itâ€™s essential to drink plenty of fluids (preferably water)Â before, during and afterÂ working in hot environments.
Your body sheds fluid through sweating, and this must be replaced. As a rule of thumb, consuming a cup of water every 15 minutes will keep you properly hydrated.

You should also avoid caffeinated and overly sweet drinks such as soft drinks as they are diuretic, meaning they remove fluid from your system. Alcohol should also be avoided, as it is also a diuretic and it also interferes with the body's temperature regulation.
