What Makes Work Gloves Essential Safety Supplies?

Work glove safety equipment importance

Wearing proper work gloves will provide industrial workers with the right combination of safety and functionality.

Wearing work gloves can be a real pain. Well, if you’re wearing the wrong ones they can be. If you’re wearing the right ones, they’ll save you from experiencing real pain.

As far as safety supplies go, gloves are critical to providing protection for our hands and fingers. Finding a pair that offers the perfect combination of safety and functionality is so important.

The Human Hand Is a Thing To Marvel (and Protect)

The human hand is capable of so much. From performing the most intricate actions such as brain surgery or typing, to the most physical (punching a heavy bag or gripping a hammer), they are responsible for much of what we have accomplished as a species.

Here’s what the average hand looks like by the numbers:

  • 27 bones in the hand (plus some tiny sesamoid bones)
  • 14 phalanges of the thumb and fingers.
  • 8 carpals (wrist bones)
  • 5 metacarpals (connecting fingers to the wrist)

Knitting this intricate network together are 29 joints and more than 120 named ligaments. Looked at from this perspective, the hand is an extremely complex and remarkable ‘tool.’ They’re also quite sensitive and fragile, which makes safeguarding them a worthwhile investment.

Does the Perfect Glove Exist?

Given the vast array of working conditions and job requirements across all industries, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. For instance, thework gloves a welder wears are going to be considerably different than the ones worn by a general labourer on a construction site.

Depending on a worker’s job description, it might be necessary to wear different types of gloves for different aspects of the job. By providing gloves that address site-specific hazards, employers will realize a number of benefits:

  • Fewer man-hours lost to injury
  • Increased productivity
  • Increased employee satisfaction

Factors that Affect Performance

As with any safety supplies, the primary focus of work gloves is to protect the well being of the people wearing them from a variety of hazards:

  • Scrapes, cuts and other physical damage
  • Heat and flame
  • Extreme cold
  • Viruses and bacteria
  • Electrical current
  • Harmful chemicals (acids, bases, carcinogens, etc.)

Depending on the level of safety required, the fit and agility of a glove vary significantly. The type of material, thickness, stiffness and texture of gloves contribute to their ability to offer protection, but they also need to provide enough functionality in order for workers to remain productive.

Some of the common materials used in gloves include:

  • Rubber
  • Latex
  • Cotton, bamboo and other natural fibres
  • Synthetic materials (Kevlar, neoprene, nitrile, polyurethane)
  • Leather

Gloves as Part of a PPE System

When choosing work gloves, it’s important to consider how they’ll work with the industrial uniforms and other personal protection equipment (PPE) worn by your workers.
