3 Ways to Get the Most out of Safety Supplies on the Worksite

Safety supplies help prevent accidents by protecting workers from jobsite hazards.

Safety supplies play an integral part in providing protection for workers on the jobsite. They make people more visible to onsite equipment operators, they protect their bodies from falling or flying objects and they can even prevent burns.

However, without proper employee training or a health, safety and environmental (HSE) policy, the various types of personal protection equipment (PPE) might not always be used correctly or in the right conditions.

 

1. Choose the Right Safety Equipment

When selecting safety equipment, you’ll need to determine what the jobsite requirements are and then find suitable PPE that provides the right level of protection. You should also consider how much training and maintenance is required to keep the equipment in good working condition.

When appropriate, PPE should also meet the regulatory guidelines of safety organizations such as:

  • CSA (Canadian Standards Association)
  • ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials)
  • UL (Underwriter’s Laboratories)

  • When and where they should use it
  • What are the equipment’s limits

If a worker gains just one more insight from this type of training, it could prevent an accident.

 

3. No Job Too Small

On smaller or more routine jobs, it can be easy for workers to forget or become complacent towards PPE. It’s essential to stress that whenever PPE is required, it must be worn at all times.

It’s the employer’s legal responsibility to provide adequate safety protection and training for all employees. They should also monitor the workplace to ensure this equipment is being used properly, and take necessary action to reinforce the message if it’s not.
